Wood pellets are a by-product of the lumber industry and consist of wood fibres that have been sorted by size, compressed, heat treated and sterilized (to remove tars, oils, hydrocarbons and other allergens). When water is added to the pellets, they expand in size and can absorb 9 times more liquid than regular shavings. Just like a sponge, a slightly damp product absorbs vastly more than a dry one. Using pellets can reduce the amount of waste you are removing from your stables and lower the costs of stall bedding. Due to the small particle size as a result this composts quickly & efficiently.
Can easily used in conjunction with regular shavings, thus getting the best of both worlds, very high absorbancy and the comfort of a deep bed
An average stable 12x12 will take 10-12 bags to begin with, then add 1-2 bags per week depending on the horse.
Shavings have become a very popular type of horse bedding, traditionally a waste product - now a commodity!. They are easy to muck out and very absorbent . Originally used for a deep litter bed, they are now frequently used with rubber mats and used more sparingly.
It takes about 4-5 bales of shavings to start a bed, followed by 1 or 2 bales a week to maintain a good bed.
Disposal of shavings waste can be a problem - they take a long time to rot and are often unwelcome on stable yard muckheaps.
Rubber matting provides good support and grip for a horse's limbs and feet. As it covers the whole stable floor the risk of injury to your horse or pony from falls or slipping is reduced.
Rubber matting is typically used under another bedding material such as wood pellets, hemp or shavings, allowing the owner to reduce the bedding material and therefore save money, whilst not risking injury or poor health to the horse.
Although the initial cost of the matting is quite high, this is offset by the amount of bedding consumed, other benefits include time saving doing the mucking out and reduced muckheap size (and often the charge to clear that away).
Standard thickness is 17mm, but beware, cheap mats have a lower % of rubber and will then turn up at the edges, become a ‘trip’ risk and not last anything like as long.
Ideally mats should be lifted once a year (Spring Clean) and a good disinfectant used, such as CleanRound which kills 99.999% of viruses, germs etc (including Strangles and Ringworm).
Aubiose is a 100% natural, organically cultivated hemp. Ideal for horses with respiratory problems, thrush or just because you love him!
Aubiose is a completely different type of bedding and should provide you with savings in time and labour if it is managed properly. The bedding works by soaking up liquids in a small area, at the base of the bed. The capped layer that forms over this saturated material reduces the chance of wet bedding being mixed in with the dry. The top layer of the bed remains warm, soft and dry for the horse.
Aubiose is a 100% natural material, which composts readily without the need for added composting agents. For this reason farmers and gardeners love it. Furthermore, Aubiose is an annually renewable resource, which can be traced back to the field in which it was grown!
Most importantly Aubiose is good for your horse, providing a clean, natural and healthy stable environment giving extended nights for him and extended days for you.
